Service Description

De-Escalation Course #1849 — Main Learning Objectives The goal of the De-Escalation Course #1849 is to provide law enforcement officers with the knowledge, communication skills, tactical considerations, and decision-making strategies necessary to safely manage critical incidents and persons in crisis. The course emphasizes the Critical Decision-Making Model (CDM), Tactical Decision Model (TDM), crisis recognition, tactical communication, threat and risk assessment, tactical repositioning, and agency-approved force options while operating within constitutional requirements, Texas law, agency policy, and training. Students will develop the ability to slow situations when circumstances permit, make sound tactical decisions, reduce unnecessary uses of force, improve officer and public safety, and clearly articulate their actions and decisions. Upon completion, students will be able to: -Explain the purpose and principles of de-escalation. -Differentiate between Crisis Intervention Tactics (CIT) and de-escalation tactics. -Apply the Critical Decision-Making Model (CDM) during critical incidents. -Integrate the Tactical Decision Model (TDM) with the CDM. -Recognize and appropriately respond to persons experiencing behavioral crisis. -Apply active listening, tactical communication, rapport-building, and nonverbal communication. -Use tactical pause, distance, cover, time, and tactical repositioning when appropriate. -Conduct continuous threat and risk assessment and reassessment. -Coordinate team roles, communication, and available resources during critical incidents. -Integrate agency-approved force options with de-escalation strategies. -Apply constitutional safeguards, Texas law, agency policy, and training to officer decision-making. -Recognize actions and conditions that may increase officer, agency, and municipal liability. -Conduct and participate in After-Action Reviews (AARs). -Articulate and justify decisions using a structured decision-making process. -Apply de-escalation and decision-making principles during scenario-based critical-incident training.
