TCOLE Course #1850 – Course Summary Course Title: Crisis Intervention Training (CIT) Course Description: This 40 hour course is designed to provide Texas peace officers with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and effectively respond to incidents involving individuals experiencing a mental health crisis. Emphasis is placed on de-escalation techniques, communication strategies, legal considerations, and resource identification to reduce the potential for use of force and improve outcomes for individuals in crisis. Participants will explore behavioral health conditions, substance abuse issues, and developmental disabilities that may impact an individual’s actions during law enforcement encounters. The course also addresses officer safety, liability, and coordination with mental health professionals and community-based resources. Topics Covered: Topics covered: Unit 1: Developing a Basic Understanding of CIT Unit 2: Defining and discussing the Meaning and Implications of Crisis Unit 3: Increasing Awareness of mental Illness and Associated Adversity Unit 4: Mental Health Conditions Most Commonly Encountered by Law Enforcement Officers Unit 5: Effective Communication Skills to Aid in Working with a Possible Mental Health Crisis Unit 6: Deinstitutionalization, Crime and Homelessness as they Relate to Mental Health Issues Unit 7: Legal Considerations for a Police Officer Intervening During a Mental Health Crisis Unit 8: Jail Diversion Programs and Alternative Options Unit 9: Accessing Mental Health Resources in Your Area Who should attend: Texas Peace Officers desiring Intermediate Proficiency Certification.
