Service Description
This 8 hour course will train officers to familiarize themselves as a Patrol Rifle Operator with current weapon system of operations, tactical deployment, and decision making regarding the use of the patrol rifle. This course trains officers to a high degree of skill and proficiency with the patrol rifle in the areas of safety, handling, maintenance, manipulation, shooting, combat tactics, and decision making. Patrol Rifle Operator Course – Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, the officer will be able to: • Identify the major components, controls, and safety features of the patrol rifle. • Explain the cycle of operation and the function of each component. • Demonstrate safe handling procedures during loading, unloading, and clearing malfunctions. • Zero the patrol rifle to agency standards at the approved distance and explain the importance of zeroing. • Describe the effects of mechanical offset and ballistic performance at various engagement distances. • Apply marksmanship fundamentals to achieve accurate hits from 0–100 yards. • Execute positional shooting (standing, kneeling, prone, and barricade-supported) under time constraints. • Perform tactical movement and use of cover/concealment while deploying the patrol rifle from their units. • Transition effectively between rifle and duty pistol when required. • Clear common rifle malfunctions using immediate and remedial action techniques. • Integrate rifle deployment into active shooter, high-risk vehicle stop, and perimeter security scenarios. • Apply agency use-of-force policy, legal standards (Graham v. Connor, Tennessee v. Garner), and sound judgment in patrol rifle deployment. • Demonstrate competency in written testing, live-fire qualification, and scenario-based evaluations. Officers will be train on the mandated training duties of constitutional law, law, policy, training and experience. Prerequisites: Texas Peace Officer. Equipment Needed: All assigned duty gear, weapon systems, light systems. ballistic gear, 200 rounds rifle ammunition, 50 rounds handgun. Eye and ear protection. Patrol or assigned unit. This course will be taught by Valor Lead Trainer; Ret. Chief of Police | SWAT Commander J. Gonzalez.
