Course Goal Prepare newly appointed first-line supervisors with the leadership, management, communication, legal, and decision-making skills necessary to effectively lead personnel, manage organizational risk, promote accountability, and build a professional, ethical, and high-performing law enforcement team. Learning Objectives Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to: Explain the responsibilities, expectations, and leadership role of a first-line law enforcement supervisor. Demonstrate ethical leadership principles that promote professionalism, integrity, accountability, and public trust. Apply effective communication techniques when interacting with employees, supervisors, elected officials, and the community. Utilize leadership styles appropriate for various operational, administrative, and critical incident environments. Conduct performance evaluations, coaching sessions, and employee counseling using sound supervisory practices. Identify methods to motivate employees while improving morale, productivity, and team performance. Recognize and appropriately address employee misconduct, disciplinary issues, and policy violations. Understand supervisory responsibilities regarding risk management, liability reduction, and documentation. Apply sound decision-making and critical thinking during routine operations and high-risk incidents. Manage conflict resolution among employees while maintaining professionalism and organizational effectiveness. Identify employee wellness concerns, including stress, fatigue, critical incident impacts, and available support resources. Demonstrate effective delegation, time management, and organizational skills necessary for successful supervision. Understand the supervisor's role in policy implementation, accountability, and maintaining organizational standards. Apply principles of mentoring and developing future leaders within the organization. Strengthen supervisory confidence through practical leadership discussions and scenario-based exercises. Course Summary The TCOLE New Supervisors Course (#3737) is the mandatory leadership course for Texas peace officers transitioning into first-line supervisory positions. This 32-hour program equips newly promoted supervisors with the practical leadership skills necessary to successfully manage personnel, reduce organizational liability, improve communication, enhance employee performance, and lead with professionalism and integrity.
